Virtual Christmas music bingo: play online with the family, wherever they are

Not everyone makes it home for Christmas. The grandparents are in another city, a cousin is working abroad, half the family is in a different time zone. A video call is nice for twenty minutes, then everyone runs out of things to say. A game fixes that, and Christmas music bingo is the easiest one to run online: nobody has to explain the rules, and everyone from the grandkids to the grandparents knows Jingle Bell Rock.

BingoCreator runs the whole game in the browser. You make the cards, send one link, and every player gets their own card on their phone, wherever they are. You play the songs over the video call, they mark their cards, and the app tells you who is close to a line. Free, no download, no sign-up for anyone.

How to set it up

1

Load the songs and make the cards

Open the generator with the 50-song Christmas list already loaded, or paste your own public Spotify playlist. Generate one card per player, plus a few spare for whoever turns up late.

2

Press Play and send the link

On the cards screen, press the green Play button. Send the game link to the family group chat. Each person opens it, types a name and gets a card. No app, no account.

3

Start the video call and share the music

Call everyone on Zoom, Google Meet or whatever the family uses, and play the songs from your computer with the sound shared, so everyone hears the same thing at the same time.

4

Play and check the bingos

Tick each song as it plays. Players tap the squares on their phones, and when someone claims a line or a bingo, your host screen shows the claim and flags any square marked for a song that has not played yet. You approve or reject it.

Getting the music to everyone

The cards are on the phones; the music comes from you. The cleanest way is to share your computer's sound in the call, so it reaches everyone straight from the source instead of being picked up by your microphone.

If your songs came from Spotify, the host screen has a play button next to each one, and opening it marks the song as called. That way you do not have to tick and play separately.

Two screens work best

Players see the video call on the laptop or the TV and mark their card on the phone. If someone only has one device, the card fits next to the call on a tablet, or they can share a phone with someone in the same room.

Some at the table, some on the call

The most common Christmas is a mix: eight people around the table and three on the screen. They all join the same game from the same link. The ones at the table hear the music from the room, the ones far away hear it from the call, and the host screen shows all of them in one list, with a progress bar for each player. Put the call on the TV so the table can see the faces on the other end when someone claims a line.

If a grandparent does not use a smartphone, pair them with a grandchild on the same phone, or let them play on a printed card from the same generator and check it by hand when they shout.

Which songs to play

The 50-song Christmas list is built for exactly this mix of ages: the radio hits (Mariah Carey, Wham!, Brenda Lee), the crooners the grandparents grew up with (Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra) and the newer ones the teenagers get first (Ariana Grande, Sia, Justin Bieber). For a family with young children, untick the slow carols and keep the ones they sing at school. A 4×4 card with about 30 songs gives a round of fifteen to twenty minutes, about right for a call.

Across time zones

A game stays open for 24 hours, and a player who closes the tab comes back to the same card. That does not make it asynchronous, because the songs are played live, but it means you can create the game and share the link the day before, so everyone has joined before the call starts and nobody spends the first ten minutes looking for it.

Frequently asked questions

Is virtual Christmas music bingo free?

Yes. Making the cards, hosting the game and joining it are all free, with no subscription, no watermark and no account for anyone.

Do players need to download an app?

No. They open the link in the browser on their phone, tablet or computer, type a name and get a card. That is the whole sign-up.

How many people can play?

One player per card, and a game can have up to 70 cards, so up to 70 players. Generate a couple of spare cards. If every card is taken, the next person is told the game is full, and the host can add cards from the host screen to let them in.

How do the players hear the music?

The host plays the songs and shares the sound in the video call: in Zoom, tick Share sound when sharing the screen; in Google Meet, present the Chrome tab that is playing the music. The app does not stream audio itself.

Can some people play at the table and others from home?

Yes. Everyone joins the same game from the same link. The people in the room hear the music from the speaker, the ones far away hear it from the call, and the host sees all the players in one list.

Who checks that a bingo is real?

The host. When a player claims a line or a full card, the host screen shows the claim and highlights any square marked for a song that has not been played yet. The host approves or rejects it.

Do I need Spotify Premium?

No. Spotify is only a shortcut for building the song list: you can load our ready-made Christmas list, import a public playlist without logging in, or type the songs by hand. During the game, play the music from whatever you like.
